A 5-year study in 522 dogs found that those eating fresh, homemade-style food lived on average almost 3 years longer than canned-fed dogs, and a separate senior-dog trial showed that fresh, minimally processed diets improved ageing-related metabolic markers.
Around 70% of dogs on balanced fresh / home-prepared diets are reported to have softer, shinier coats and healthier skin.
In dogs with chronic tummy or skin issues, over 80–95% improved after switching to a properly balanced fresh diet.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Gently cooked, real food you can see | Hard dry pellets, ultra-processed | Dried meat chunks, still a dry food | Soft food in cans or pouches | Uncooked meat and organs |
| Ingredients | Human-style meat and veg, short clear list | Often fillers and by-products | Very rich and calorie-dense | Quality varies a lot by brand | Depends totally on recipe and sourcing |
| Digestion & poo | Easy on the tummy; smaller, better-formed stool | Can be harder to digest; bigger, smellier stool | Rich food; easy to upset sensitive stomachs | Some dogs OK, some get gas or soft stools | Can upset stomach if too fatty or unbalanced |
| Moisture | High water, helps hydration | Very dry; dog must drink more | Very low moisture unless you add water | Very wet; good water but less nutrition per gram | Moist but raw juices can carry germs |
| Health feel | Supports shiny coat, better skin and healthy ageing | Covers basics if well made, not focused on “fresh” health | Can be fine, but not much long-term research yet | Can be good, but depends strongly on recipe | Long-term benefits are unclear and mixed |
| Safety | Cooked to safe temps, low bacteria risk | Generally safe and stable | Usually safe, but can go off if stored badly | Safe in can; once opened, spoils fast | Higher germ risk (Salmonella, etc.), especially in warm, humid places |
| Lifestyle | Needs fridge/freezer; feels like a home-cooked meal in a bowl | Super convenient, just scoop and pour | Handy for travel and treats; pricey for every day | Easy to serve but heavy and messy to store and bin | High effort: freezer space, thawing and strict hygiene |

“Kibble has everything my dog needs.”
Kibble labeled as "complete and balanced" means it meets the minimum nutrition requirements set by AAFCO. Quality, source and processing of the ingredients is not guaranteed. Some so-called "beef" kibbles made with meat meals may contain only around 6% real beef content!
“Kibble contains real nutrition from real ingredients.”
Kibble does contain real ingredients but most of the natural nutrients and flavours are destroyed during high-heat extrusion process. Artificial flavors and synthetic additives are usually added to fill the gap.
“Raw food is the most natural choice.”
Raw food diets are often considered "natural" as it mimics the ancestral diet of the pets. However, raw food poses risks of bacterial contamination and nutritional imbalances when it is not properly prepared and formulated.
“Home-cooked fresh dog food is the best option.”
Fresh food is definitely a better option but without professional knowledge and careful calculations, home-cooked dog food lacking adequate nutrients can be harmful to dogs.
